 Why Outdoor Coaching?

The benefits of coaching are well documented and understood. These benefits can be manifold when the coaching experience happens outside, in a safe, supportive environment. 

Traditional coaching takes places indoors, sat down, confined within the traditional four walls of an office. Outdoors coaching immediately brings the benefits of movement and nature and the different dynamics that they bring to the coaching relationship which can massively open things up. The benefits of outdoor coaching fall broadly within four main areas:

  • Physical – movement and being able to change your pace as you walk opens up conversations 
  • Mental – well documented mental health benefits of being outside such as relaxing, reducing stress and slowing our brain down
  • Nature – visual, smells, sounds of being connected to nature reduce blood pressure, cortisol levels and immune boosting
  • Creativity – other parts of the brain open up stimulating creativity and new ways of doing things

How We Work

Chemistry Mind and Body Walking recognises that much of the success of the coaching relationship is based on the chemistry between the coach and coachee.  Before we begin coaching, let alone venture outside, we suggest a free of charge chemistry conversation to check that there is good chemistry between us which facilitates open conversation. 

If you decide to go ahead there is an element of trust that needs to be built up between us so we suggest having our first meeting indoors, in an environment where the coachee is comfortable and feels safe. We will discuss how the coaching can proceed, not everyone wants to go outside, and we respect this and can carry on indoors, integrating benefits from nature into the process in other ways. However, if the coachee is keen to explore the benefits of taking this outside then we build a plan to make this happen.

Coaching Agreement

The coach and coachee will build an agreement together between them which sets out the terms of reference of the coaching sessions with agreed outcomes and timescales. We look to define what areas we will cover, although this may well evolve as the process develops. 

Coaching Locations

Locations for coaching sessions could be in a local park around the corner from the office, remotely with us both on the telephone whilst walking, a beautiful forest walk or a breath taking climb up the side of Kinder Scout, or a combination of any of these, depending on what feels right for the conversations we shall be having. We often meet people first thing in the morning before their day starts, sometimes we take a few hours in the morning for a walk and a trip to a coffee shop. sometimes in the evening. Whatever works best for the coachee. We use metaphors a lot in our practice and nature provides an abundance of opportunities to explore which relate to every day life and circumstances. 

After each meeting we take time to reflect on the conversations and consider how we can develop the conversations. We ask the coachee to do the same and we work with them for as long and often as they feel necessary.  

 Typical Coaching Session

 A typical coaching session lasts between 90 and 120 minutes and is tightly built around the specific needs of the coachee. Each session is built specifically around helping the coachee to achieve their goals, with much of the first session built around defining these. Coaching usually happens once a month and carries on for as long as it is beneficial to the coachee. In between coaching sessions you will be reflecting and working on actions to help you to achieve your goals and putting your agreed actions into practice.

I have met with Katy a few times over the summer, and greatly benefitted from her coaching. She has an amazing ability to focus on the key thing without me realising that she was doing it.
