Lowland Leader Mentoring
Katy says: When I first started my Lowland Leader journey a few years ago there was very little support around. I ended up joining more advanced peer to peer support groups just to find some support. They were too much for me and felt really quite out of my depth. I am passionate about promoting the Lowland Leader Award and encouraging people to enter the Mountain Training Awards at the grass roots level. The awards are stand alone and only hierarchical in that there is an increase in technical skills required as the ground rises. Specific skills are required in the lowlands that are now relevant to the mountains and I’m keen to promote this as a valuable award in its own right
Walking and leading in the lowlands is very different from that in the hills, moors and mountains. The terrain is different, often muddier, and there is different vegetation and wildlife all around. Relationships with the landowners are different and need understanding, and the skills and abilities of the clients are different too. And there are more roads!
I’m a very experienced lowland walker, with decades of walking around the lowlands of the UK under my belt. I’m keen to champion and support those starting on their Mountain Training journey by helping people with this first Lowland Leader Award.
Volunteer Mentor Lowland Leader
I love mentoring and supporting people on their journey and am keen to play forward the support I have received on my journey so far. I will be volunteering as a volunteer lowland leader mentor as part of the Mountain Training Association Mentor Scheme. I am aiming to support two people a year in this. These will be free of charge.
Chargeable Mentor Lowland Leader
I will take on additional mentees outside the scheme which will be chargeable at a reasonable rate with bags of support packed in.

If you’re interested in discussing this further do get in touch and we can have a chat about what you need and how we might be able to support you. If you have needs that I may not be able to help with I will signpost you to other people in our network who can do this.
I’m currently shadowing Lowland Leader training courses myself with a view to formally delivering training on them in the future.
