Forest Building and Nature Connectivity Day 2 June, Grindleford, Peak District

Katy Draper from Mind and Body Walking teamed up with Dr David Fong from David Fong Psychologyto deliver an inspirational forest bathing and nature connectivity day from Grindleford, deep in the heart of the Peak District on 2 June. The pair were volunteering to lead this peer to peer day for the Mountain Training Association and the British Mountaineering Council.

A group of 14 adventurers met at the cafe at Grindleford station before heading out to pick up a delightful route which took them along the Derwent Valley and deep into the heart of the woods around Grindleford. There are many ancient trees in this area and a wide diversity of flora and fauna so there was plenty to explore!

David led the group on an in depth journey through the senses and how we can use them to get closer to the natural environment, and the session was packed with hints and tips for getting our clients (this being an event for walk leaders) to properly engage with nature.

Katy led a discussion around what Forest Bathing is before heading down to the river for a break and some breathing techniques.  The group then headed into the forest and did several forest bathing type exercises which were insightful and deeply relaxing.

There are many benefits to forest bathing – many of which are supported by robust research, largely spreadheaded by the Shinrin Yoko movement in Japan. These benefits include boosts to the immune system, recuded cortisol levels, lower blood pressure and heart rate, improved mood and creater creativity.

David and Katy ar planning further Forest Bathing activities so do look out for future dates. The next planned event are 2nd July and 10th September.  For more information please do give Katy a ring on 07941 465 799 or email katydraper@mindandbodywalking.co.uk
